Overview
On 2 January 2025, Afya Nzuri Network conducted a one-day health education outreach at Mpondwe Primary School in Bwera, Kasese District. The event was organised in partnership with the Amirats — a group of women from the Bwera Muslim Community — who mobilised local adolescents for the session.
Topics Covered
The team delivered interactive sessions on five key areas:
- Personal hygiene — practical daily habits for staying healthy
- Mental health awareness — recognising depression, anxiety, stress, and substance abuse
- HIV/AIDS prevention — transmission, protection, and reducing stigma
- Reproductive health — dangers of early pregnancy and consequences of early contraceptive use
- Menstrual hygiene — normalising menstruation and promoting proper hygiene practices
Who We Reached
- 73 adolescents attended — 46 girls and 27 boys, aged 8 to 23 years
- All participants received education on personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, and mental wellness
- The team also encouraged young people to stay in school and complete their education
What We Observed
The adolescents were visibly engaged throughout the sessions, paying close attention and asking numerous questions during the Q&A. Their curiosity and willingness to learn confirmed a strong demand for this kind of health education in the community.
Looking Ahead
The success of this outreach highlights the need to extend similar programmes to other religious groups, schools, and community organisations across Kasese District and beyond.
